At the Front Shrine of the Nan Tien Temple (see previous). Nearby is a large incense burner (PiP) and the Shrine itself (just inside) is in the second PiP. Happy Bench Monday, everyone, and have a good week.

Nan Tien Temple entry

17 May 2022 25 17 238
The Nan Tien Temple was built by the Mahayana Buddhist organisation known as Fo Guang Shan and was completed in 1995. It is certainly Australia's largest Buddhist temple and, I understand, probably the largest in the Southern Hemisphere. In the PiP, one of the gate guardians.

Pak Ou caves

25 Jun 2020 55 51 510
Upstream on the Mekong River from Luang Prabang are the Pak Ou caves. They're now a tourist destination, but for aeons they have been a revered Buddhist shrine where people have left statues of the Buddha, some now exceedingly old. (See the PiPs.) Best viewed large. Click here for a view from the caves. HFF everyone, stay safe and have a great weekend. Explored.

Wat Xieng Thong

17 May 2020 32 21 297
A stitched panorama, best viewed large. The main building (central to this image) was built in 1560 and the kings of Luang Prabang were crowned there until 1975. The name of the Wat means "Monastery of the Golden City". A view of the main entry is in the note.

Vat Nong Sikhounmuang

20 Apr 2020 30 28 401
Luang Prabang is a major centre for Buddhist Monasteries. More images of this one in the PiPs, which show some spectacular 'Nagas' (multi-headed cobra protectors) alongside staircases. In two of the Pips, there also are some young novice Monks watching as the camera wielding tourists wander around. View large on black.

Ring the bell!

03 Nov 2017 23 24 681
The big Buddhist bell at the Little Wild Goose Pagoda in Xian. The chime was every bit as impressive as the size would suggest. HFF and best wishes for the weekend, everyone. UPDATE: I've found a youtube link to a similar bell, so you can listen: www.youtube.com/watch?v=p-CsvjXWYH8 SECOND UPDATE Tanja - Loughcrew has turned up a link to a video of this very bell : www.youtube.com/watch?v=2pCLWz4uKkM Explored.

Drying robes at a Buddhist monastery - wider shot in note. Best viewed on black. I'll be away for a few days. HFF and best wishes for the weekend, everyone. Explored.

Temple and fence

This Buddhist temple in Luang Prabang is one of a great many. It also has a traditional Laotian style fence. HFF. Best viewed on black (click on image).

Monks Luang Prabang

10 Jun 2013 14 11 696
Every morning, hundreds of Buddhist monks walk the streets of Luang Prabang to gather and distribute alms. With their saffron robes, they make a spectacular sight.
