Australian Magpie

21 Jun 2020 38 28 291
I was walking alongside the road through our local nature reserve when some friends came by in their car. They stopped and we chatted, when along came this Australian magpie and landed on the car roof. It is one of the local family whose territory this is, and they are very friendly to visitors (this way they are usually given treats). Best wishes to everyone for the solstice, wherever you are.

Well that's the name I've given this Crimson Rosella who visits almost daily. When he arrives he sings till I feed him some seed - he has trained me. :-) Explored.

Pity about the post :-)

Eastern Yellow Robin. Reasonably common on most of Australia's east coast. Here's a musical link. Explored.

One of several keas (NZ mountain parrots) in the carpark at Arthur's Pass, in the Southern Alps. Other images in notes.

I'm a kea

Keas are mountain parrots, found only on the South Island of New Zealand. Details about them are on the sign in the notes. This one was at Arthur's Pass. They are unconcerned being near people.

Waterbirds

07 Nov 2015 16 8 692
We found this assortment of waterbirds, including two feral geese, outside Christchurch. Explored.

Dual portrait

07 Nov 2015 10 9 609
On our first trip from Christchurch we met this pair of Pacific Black Ducks, who obligingly posed for a portrait. Best on black.

Snares Penguins

29 Jan 2015 34 23 694
Snares Penguins on the rock slope of the Snares Islands, close to sea level where we were floating by in zodiacs. Snares Penguins are unique to the Snares Islands. They have quite a climb from here to their rookeries at the top of the slope (see other image, also in inset). This image finalises my sub-Antarctic series. Try this on black. Explored.

New Holland Honeyeater

10 Nov 2014 46 25 863
New Holland Honeyeaters are among the more common avian residents in our area. They are nectar eaters and are attracted to the flowering callistemons seen here. Explored.

"Twist more to the left"

16 Apr 2014 24 20 1078
A pair of Sulphur-crested Cockatoos, attempting to dismantle my neighbour's weather station. They are inquisitive and can be quite destructive. I chased them away after getting this shot. Explored

The Three Beaks

I'll wrap up my set from Mallacoota with these three handsome Australian Pelicans.

The Flotilla

A flotilla of Australian Pelicans ( Pelicanus conspicillatus ) on Mallacoota Inlet

Red-browed Firetail

02 Mar 2014 21 19 746
Red-browed Firetail (Neochmia temporalis), also known as a Red-browed Finch. A family of these little birds have become regular and very welcome visitors.

Female Superb Fairy Wren

21 Mar 2013 516
More's the pity the female doesn't have more colour, more's the pity also that she persisted in hopping about among the shrubbery instead of coming into the clear...

Brush wattlebird feeding

24 Aug 2013 9 15 1136
Brush Wattlebird enjoying a meal of nectar from a Banksia flower spike. With the Pentax, the focal length needs to be entered for manual lenses - I forgot to change it for this shot with the 100mm from earlier use with a 50mm, hence the wrong FL shown in the EXIF info.

Out of there! #2 of sequence

20 Aug 2013 11 12 677
Contrary to appearances, the galah is not attacking the rainbow lorikeet, just the opposite. The lorikeet has dived in at high speed, making the galah leap backwards from the feeder. Lorikeets are often very aggressive when food is involved.

Galah portrait. #1 of sequence

20 Aug 2013 8 18 662
One of a family of galahs that regularly come to our bird feeder. This one was kindly posing for the camera until, to its surprise and mine, a hungry rainbow lorikeet arrived (next shot).
