Year of the Dragon

10 Feb 2024 31 24 224
Today (10 Feb) is the first day of the Lunar New Year, this time heading into the Year of the Dragon. That led me to search my archives for images of dragons and this Eastern_bearded_dragon raised its head. These are native to the east coast of Australia. I wish everyone a Happy Year of the Dragon.

Cleaning your elephant

17 Oct 2020 43 26 343
Elephant cleaning is one of those jobs needing to be done from time to time. This elephant was being cleaned in the river near our guest house. As you will see, the procedure is to add some sandy mud, then rub with one of your thongs (flip-flop to some of you). The next steps are in the PiPs and also below (I've worked out that PiPs are not visible on mobile phones - mine at least).

Fog rolling through

23 Mar 2016 32 24 706
Unusual daytime fog rolling through our local National Park and the Spotted Gums, with a couple of the local 'roos watching me. Explored.

Wet giraffes

01 Jul 2015 24 14 581
A very wet day at Mogo Zoo didn't seem to upset these two giraffes awaiting feeding. Explored.

The snow leopard

24 Jun 2015 50 30 962
Endangered in the wild, this is at Mogo Zoo. View large on black and meditate that the total number is counted in just thousands. Explored.

Before the races

12 Apr 2015 22 22 590
Camel racing is held annually at Easter in Forbes, where we had our old car gathering. Too good to pass, we had to be there (as were a great many local people, see note). Best viewed large. Explored.

In the Grass

15 Jun 2014 10 13 734
Mustard Bellied Snake (Elapognathus rhodogaster). These tiny snakes grow to only about 30cm long - this appeared to be a young one, it was somewhat shorter than full size and less than 10mm thick (compare it against the lawn). It did not show any signs of aggression so my neighbour picked it up on a shovel, put it in a bucket, and we released it back in the nearby nature reserve. They are categorised as only 'mildly venomous'. Second shot in note.

Australian Fur Seal

22 Mar 2014 19 23 669
This Australian Fur Seal ( Arctocephalus pusillus doriferus ) was resident in Mallacoota Inlet, I gather it had been living there for some time. It certainly was very relaxed at being near photographers shooting furiously, and was lazily floating around in circles doing the sidestroke. Second shot in the note.

Roo portrait

08 Jul 2013 8 7 564
I was busily taking photos of the masses of birdlife which descended on our camp, but I was oblivious for some time to this large Eastern Grey kangaroo who had sidled up to within a metre of me and seemed fascinated by this photography business. So I stepped back and took his portrait: he was nearly as tall as me!
