Crimson Turkey Bush
05 Oct 2021 |
|
|

The Crimson Turkey Bush grows in the desert and semi-arid areas from western Queensland and New South Wales to the West Australian coast. Being there in the winter and spring months is the time to see these in flower.
Distracted

Amazingly, not only were we invited to visit the school (see earlier images), we were allowed to take photos in the classrooms. This young girl looked somewhat inattentive in class - probably distracted by the "farangs" (Lao term for westerners) with cameras. In the PiP an image of the early primary classroom.
Laos village

This little village is up in the mountains to the west of Phonsavan and that is the main road. I've tried to locate this on the map, but without success. Either way, we stopped here for a visit and to meet some of the local residents. The (clickable) PiP is taken looking past the house to the right from the same position.
Evening markets
13 May 2020 |
|
|
|
If the morning markets in Luang Prabang are largely about fresh food, the evening street markets are about fabrics and clothing (PiP 1) and "ready to go" food (PiPs 2-4). Stand aside Maccas and Colonel, there's more variety here!
Around Luang Prabang

A "must do" thing, when visiting Luang Prabang, is to rise early and watch the alms giving and donating parade of hundreds of Buddhist monks through the town. I was fascinated to see this 1950s Citroen and a similar vintage Mercedes, as the monks passed by - with the colonial style buildings this image could well have been taken many years earlier, so I've given it a 'film' look. Best viewed large and see also clickable PiPs. HFF, best wishes for the weekend, everyone - and stay safe.
St Bede's

St Bede's in Braidwood was built from local granite in 1852. The funeral service for the Special Constables was held here, prior to them being buried in the local cemetery where a memorial column marks their grave (PiPs).

Sunset on the Shoalhaven

An evening view of the upper Shoalhaven valley, the setting for much of the bushranger story, taken from our former property. View large.
In mid-1866, the government appointed three bounty hunters as "Special Constables" to find and apprehend the bushrangers. After operating, supposedly secretly, they proved ineffective and were withdrawn. In September 1866, a second party of four were given "Special Constable" status. Heading to Braidwood, they pretended they were in the area as surveyors and set up camp near the Clarke household. What could possibly go wrong?

In the forest

Creek and forest in what is now the Monga National Park. Back to my bushranger story about the Clarke brothers gang, as this was in the area they travelled. After the Nerrigundah shooting, Tom Clarke and his uncle Pat Connell were declared outlaws. Not long after the gang made a second raid on Mudmelong, a police party found the bushrangers' camp in the bush. While several escaped, Connell was shot when he attempted to ride away. A few months later, his brother Tom Connell was captured.

Sand and surf

Plenty of sand and surf here! That surf looks a bit risky though, with at least two large rips visible. Anyway, if surfing appeals, here's a song to go with it. Best viewed large.

Late afternoon light, with a windmill, which prompts me to this musical link. Best viewed large like the landscape. HFF and have a great weekend, everyone.

HMAS Whyalla
01 Mar 2018 |
|
|
|
In 1941, HMAS Whyalla was the first ship built in the industrial town of the same name. After it was retired from the navy, it was hauled high onto dry land (at Whyalla, near where it was built) and now forms the centrepiece of a maritime museum. HFF everyone, and keep warm in the north.

I don't have many buildings in my image stream. Luckily, South Australia has a heritage of great old stone buildings, like this one at Sevenhill Cellars. HFF and have a great weekend, everyone.

More of the Breakaways
25 Apr 2017 |
|
|
|
Out in central Australia, between Coober Pedy and Oodnadatta, are some very eroded hills, known as "The Breakaways". They are relics of what the general land surface was some many millions of years ago before erosion took most of it away. These remain because there is some harder rock at the top. Spectacular but very bare country - no place to be caught without water in the summer months.

Definitely one to view large, possibly while contemplating the latest (bleak) news on the status of the IMA bid for ipernity www.ipernity.com/group/2260604/discuss/186918 .

Heading down the road from the restaurant (see my previous images) we travelled past these spectacular peaks.

The bird catchers
01 Feb 2017 |
|
|
|
These men in the village of Xay Oudom were repairing a weighted net used to catch birds. It's a subsistence lifestyle in the highland villages of Laos. See the note to meet some of the village women. Well, this seems an appropriate musical link.

Watching and having a laugh as the tourists go wandering through the village of Xay Oudom (street scene in previous image). Image of some of the men in a note.
