I was very glad that, for World Environment Day, the Australian government has tripled the size of the Macquarie Island Marine Park, in the Southern Ocean, bringing it to over 475,000 sq km. This will completely close the area to fishing, mining and other extractive activities, and provide much better protection for the seals, penguins and other birdlife on the island. These are King Penguins, taken swimming around the ship on which I travelled.

The boat on which we were travelling was accompanied for part of the voyage by a pod of dolphins. If we had made the trip earlier in the season, we would have expected to see whales heading south to the Antarctic. Explored.

Taken from the deck of our ship, which was surrounded by swimming penguins while at Lusitania Bay. Somewhat ungainly while on land, the penguins are agile and fast in the water - essentially using their wings as flippers.
