Sunset storm

07 Dec 2024 32 19 214
These passing cumulonimbus clouds with the typical anvil shape were, from the weather radar, about 40 km distant from me. A short thunderstorm for some. Best viewed large.

Winter's day

13 Aug 2024 34 25 237
A very pleasant late winter's day at Maloneys Beach, as a friend and I went for a walk in the National Park. This view looking across Batemans Bay. NOTE for my friends here on ipernity. Matters unrelated to photography (all good) are likely to require much of my time for a while, so I'm afraid my involvement here may be somewhat limited.

Lunar halo

02 Sep 2020 31 44 330
I was very impressed to see this great lunar halo last night, formed by a layer of icy high level cirrostratus cloud. On the left are Jupiter and Saturn, sitting just below Sagittarius (see PiPs). Best viewed large on black.

Ummm!

30 Sep 2019 41 30 610
Not at all sure that I'd have wanted to be on this "Dash 8" aircraft heading for a landing through clouds alongside those very close mountains! No, this is not done with selective colour. :-) A musical link seems appropriate. Explored.

Clouding over

17 Dec 2018 24 18 502
Looking at the night sky up past Orion (those of you in the Northern Hemisphere would recognise this inverted), as clouds began to roll in and call a halt to proceedings. Details in notes and best viewed large. I know Pam would be interested in this.

Along the jetty

03 Mar 2017 32 25 694
Nothing like a stroll on a jetty on a warm summer's day. HFF, everyone.

In the highlands

03 Feb 2017 25 19 551
It was quite remarkable, far in the Laos highlands, to visit a hilltop restaurant - another image in a note. This was part of the scene from the viewing platform. HFF and best wishes for the weekend, everyone.

Lakes sunset

17 Aug 2016 26 13 536
On our travels - down on the east coast of Victoria. Best on black. Explored.

Mt Sefton

14 Mar 2016 42 29 721
The walk to Mt Cook (Aoraki) passes this peak and stream. Explored.

Enough waterfalls!

07 Feb 2016 34 22 846
Seeing a waterfall is great but, as with visiting cathedrals, eventually there's a point where enough becomes "enough". As the rain poured down and the number of waterfalls increased, I was very glad of my water resistant lens. View large and please excuse this musical link. Explored.

The horizontal waterfall

01 Feb 2016 22 11 688
Who said waterfalls always point downward? :-) View large, also the note for context.

Along the Sound

01 Feb 2016 20 8 760
Looking back into Milford Sound, on a wet and windy day with the waterfalls very active.

And when it rains...

30 Jan 2016 42 21 705
Milford Sound on a rainy day - and suddenly, waterfalls began to cascade down vertical rock faces in all directions. Best viewed large.

There's the Fox

11 Jan 2016 28 16 641
Heading toward the Fox Glacier. To give some perspective, see the note showing the people. Best viewed large. For an amazing view of how it has retreated in just four years, see Francis Taylor's 2011 shot, taken from almost exactly the same position. Explored.

Rolling in

09 Feb 2015 18 14 578
After a hot day, it's great when a cool change rolls in. Sometimes, as here, it is accompanied by a roll cloud. Best on black.

Macquarie Island from offshore

15 Oct 2013 7 6 544
When I left Macquarie Island after a year, in December 1968, I would never have conceived that I would return as a tourist 37 years later (see Macquarie Island 1968: A new industry arrives... ). At left is the main body of the island. The station is situated below North Head, at the right of the connecting isthmus. Macquarie Island is famed for its poor weather: the low cloud is almost constant there, with rain on most days (we were fortunate in that regard).

Nacreous Clouds at sunset

22 Mar 2015 26 21 1004
From an old 1966 slide and originally on the 'other' site. Only now being added to groups. Looking west at sunset, the light had gone from the land, the sunset was yellow, but those rare nacreous clouds continued to shine brightly long after sunset - because of their height they were still in sunshine. The colours were beautiful, I wish I'd had a digital camera to make the most of them. Best on black.

Tinderry Sunset

23 May 2013 9 6 737
Evening light over Tinderry Mountains, south of Canberra, Australia.
