Tollgate Islands

19 Aug 2023 36 27 333
Captain Cook named the Tollgate Islands when he mapped Australia's east coast in 1770. This is the view from my local beach, where they do indeed look like the gateway to a wider world. I thought this an appropriate image for World Photography Day 2023. It also places empasis on the oceans - now warming alarmingly worldwide. We, as photographers, can assist by recording changes to our global environment. The PiP shows my first camera, a Model 2A Box Brownie of about 1932 - it was very much a family "hand-me-down" when it passed to me. With it is my first SLR, a Minolta SR1 of 1964.

Bay evening

Early evening across Batemans Bay. The islands are Snapper Island at the right, the others are "The Tollgates". Best viewed large.

The wind picked up

09 Sep 2019 37 22 557
Some wind picked up as we headed toward Hammerfest, lifting drifting snow from the hillsides. Another LNG tanker at right. Explored.

Passing ships

28 Jul 2019 42 25 501
Taken a little after sunrise and before my previous image, as the Hurtigruten ship "MV Nordkapp" passed by. Sorry, I can't ID the other red ship, but this is best viewed large. Family health issues are likely to limit my involvement on ipernity, so my apologies if I do not respond to your comments or visit your images - I shall try to do so as far as possible.

Isolated lighthouse

18 Jul 2019 23 11 569
Norway has (and needs) many lighthouses along its coast. This is the Kjeungskjaer lighthouse, not too far from Trondheim. It now is automated, but I find myself trying to imagine the lifestyle of the former lightkeepers and their families, who were confined in places such as this for extended periods.

Midsummer friday fence

What could be better on a sunny midsummer's day, than a quiet beach and a cold beer? Maybe view large. The obvious musical link is here. HFF, and have a great weekend everyone. Explored.

Taiwan lilies

Growing alongside the beach. They look great, but sadly they're weeds here (also known as Formosa lilies). Best viewed large. Explored.

View to the north

26 Dec 2020 24 15 631
Looking forward - to ipernity's problems hopefully being solved early in the coming year... I'll be back in a few days. Copied (too small) from an old slide. View from the edge of the icecap behind Mawson station, early 1966, looking across the base itself, Horseshoe Harbour (beginning to freeze over), and to the islands and icebergs beyond. The surface here is blue ice: glassy hard and slippery, so my friend is wearing crampons to ensure a grip.
