Echuca Wharf

The Murray is Australia's major inland river and was once the main inland freight route, using paddle steamers - now operating for tourists. This is the wharf at Echuca, the main port for northern Victoria, with the height of the wharf reflecting the need to continue operating at varying river levels (see also PiP). The paddle steamers had to be relatively small with shallow draft, to allow operation during drought (and even then many became stranded until rivers again rose). Yes, there are benches on the top deck of the wharf and on the paddle steamer. Wishing everyone a Happy Bench Monday and a good week to come.

Tathra Wharf

Tathra Wharf is the only surviving wharf and building combination on the eastern seaboard of Australia from the period of the coastal shipping trade, commencing in the 1860s. The double storey building was added in 1907 and the last coastal steamer to collect freight was in 1954. Later came moves to demolish the wharf, which were opposed by the local community and the wharf was restored in the 1980s, finally being Heritage Listed. Further maintenance work was being done when I took this image. For the first Friday of the New Year, I'd like to wish all my ipernity friends a very Happy Fence Friday, a great weekend and through 2023.

Back at the wharf

Back at the historic Tathra wharf. I suspect that, what is now a walkway with stairs was once a cattle loading ramp. I felt this needed a musical link. Definitely needs to be viewed large. HFF and have a great weekend, everyone.
