Into eclipse as the moon rises

08 Nov 2022 29 18 249
Tonight's full moon, going into eclipse as it rises above some nearby trees. In the PiP, another shot taken slightly later without the trees. More images tomorrow, but it's now very late at night here.

More Camellias

These camellias have been flowering well since March, though some varieties are now beginning to slow. Best on black. HFF and have a great weekend, everyone.

Coastal contemplation

20 Feb 2022 29 19 243
Bench at the Mossy Point lookout, an ideal spot to contemplate the waves, seabirds, and possibly seals or whales (depending on the season). HBM, everyone.

Off into the bush

18 Sep 2018 25 16 704
Inland from the NSW south coast are ranges, few people, and lots of bushland (forests). Back in the 1800s there were gold rushes in this area, not to mention bushrangers (bandits)... Explored.

In the forest

Fungus growing on a fallen Banksia trunk. I rather like how it's grown around the grass stem at left.

After the fires

28 Aug 2018 21 19 542
Taken from much the same position as my previous image. Sadly, massive fires in March this year devastated much of the township of Tathra, right down to this spot. Even though it is late winter, the drought conditions continue and there is smoke from new fires burning inland. Explored.

Tathra - before

A scene at the delightful coastal village of Tathra - taken two years ago. There are many more houses, hidden by the bushland.

The beach awaits

It's there waiting for you. Remember though, it's winter down here, which is why it's all yours. :-) HFF and have a great weekend, everyone. Explored.

The bug on the fungus

07 May 2016 13 9 386
Back in the temperate rainforest where the light levels were very low. This little fungus was on a rotting log and I confess it wasn't until I uploaded the image that I saw the tiny bug on top.

We're going batty!

02 May 2016 14 16 574
These are Grey-headed Flying Foxes. Despite the name, these are actually fruit bats and live on nectar and fruits. They are Australia's largest bats, with a wingspan of about a metre. They are classed as endangered but this year the local colony (right in the middle of town) has grown to about 100,000 - which does create more than a few problems! For an idea of what that means, multiply the image in the note by about 1000 to account for the surrounding area.

Meet a Flying Fox

I live in Batemans Bay and there are suggestions it should now be renamed "Batman's Bay". :-) Which leads to the obvious musical link.

The rainforest fig

27 Apr 2016 23 13 475
A patch of sunlight breaking through the greenery of the rainforest to light the base of this fig. I'm unsure of the exact species (there are several), but they all parasitise other trees. They grow from a seed dropped by birds high in the branches of the host, then drop roots to ground level and proceed to grow around the host tree, strangling it in the process. Best viewed on black. Explored.

Fungi taking over

Fungi on rotting timber in temperate rainforest, NSW south coast. Explored.
