White-necked Herons

These are found across Australia. The speckling on the neck indicates that these are juveniles. Maybe best viewed large.

In the forest

Creek and forest in what is now the Monga National Park. Back to my bushranger story about the Clarke brothers gang, as this was in the area they travelled. After the Nerrigundah shooting, Tom Clarke and his uncle Pat Connell were declared outlaws. Not long after the gang made a second raid on Mudmelong, a police party found the bushrangers' camp in the bush. While several escaped, Connell was shot when he attempted to ride away. A few months later, his brother Tom Connell was captured. Explored.

Mannahill Creek

Best viewed on black. In the 1880s, the Broken Hill Proprietary Company (usually now known just as BHP) built a railway from their mine at Broken Hill to their smelter and port at Port Pirie. Mannahill is somewhere along the rail line (and now also a road). This is the creek in the area: those are ghost gums alongside the watercourse, with saltbush beyond.

In the Forest

Taken along the track to the Hogarth Falls in western Tasmania. Despite appearances, the water in the creek is fresh and clean, that brown colouring comes from tannins leaching from the sap of the trees in the forest.

Tide's Out!

Low tide in a creek entrance at Coles Bay.
