A highlight of the charity evening at the country pub was dropping a former rally car from a crane as a fund-raiser. After a few unsuccessful releases from the crane (which meant it was near dark before the event), down it came. This all seems curiously relevant to a website I frequent........ Maybe view large.

Captains Flat is usually known to locals simply as "The Flat". It's pretty quiet these days. Taken from near the former mine entrance (see note for old shot of miners at the entrance and the top of the shaft).

It all started with a bull by the name of ‘Captain', when this area was all bushland. Back in the mid 1800s Captain lived on a nearby property, but was prone to wandering. When he’d put a smile on the face of all the cows he could find, he’d head for his favourite grassy flat on the bank of the Molonglo River, as seen above and now parkland and playing fields. The area became known as ‘Captain’s Flat’ among the locals. Later came the mining and the town. And that's no bull. :-)
