Lunar New Year

This year, January 29 is the first day of the Lunar New Year, (on the Chinese zodiac) being the Year of the Snake . Read about the symbolism of it here. Happy Lunar New Year, everyone. An archival photo from my former rural property, I think it's a White Lipped Snake (Drysdalia coronoides). These are venemous but timid by nature.

Unwanted excitement

This afternoon, when my little terrier was very keen to go outside I looked tthrough the glass door and saw this Redbellied Black snake passing by. When it was heading away from the house I took these images. See also PiPs. The joys of living in a semi-rural area! Redbellies are venemous but not deadly to humans, but are the main cause of canine snakebite, so I hope my terrier doesn't see another when I'm not around!

It certainly took my mind off ipernity's pending closure when we found this small Red-Bellied Black Snake in our house, late at night! While venomous, these are not aggressive. This was only a youngster at about 400mm, fully grown they can be up to 2M long. Here it has been safely confined to a saucepan, prior to being released suitably far away. Explored.

Mustard Bellied Snake (Elapognathus rhodogaster). These tiny snakes grow to only about 30cm long - this appeared to be a young one, it was somewhat shorter than full size and less than 10mm thick (compare it against the lawn). It did not show any signs of aggression so my neighbour picked it up on a shovel, put it in a bucket, and we released it back in the nearby nature reserve. They are categorised as only 'mildly venomous'. Second shot in note.
