Nelligen Bridge

09 Mar 2023 32 36 271
The bridge at Nelligen, suffering from concrete rot and being replaced by a new bridge - seen under construction in the background (view large to see better). The new bridge has now come into operation and the old bridge is under demolition. LATE ADDITIONAL NOTE: Unfortunately the road layout meant that there was no better access to show the development of the new bridge, structurally near complete. Another week gone and it's time to wish everyone a Happy Fence Friday and a great weekend.

The bridge working area

Late afternoon views of the main working area for the demolition of the old bridge. Another week gone! Wishing everyone a safe and enjoyable weekend after a Happy Fence Friday.

Construction or ....?

A rural letterbox and fence. It seems you can buy cow poo for $5 here (for your garden), provided you're prepared to take whatever risks may be involved while the property is a construction site. :-) HFF and have a safe and enjoyable weekend, everyone.

Hanging out at the Bay

27 Aug 2020 44 32 370
Batemans Bay is getting a new bridge. I am fascinated how far this section is able to cantilever outward as it progresses to joining the next. Taken in the morning, another from the other side in the afternoon light is included in a PiP, as is another with more of the new pylons. Best viewed large. Well it's HFF! Best wishes for the weekend, everyone.

The barge and the crane

04 Jul 2020 26 17 265
It is almost a year since I took the photo of the first of the two construction barges arriving to begin work on the new bridge (see PiP). They are each about 3300 tonnes, as they need to be to carry the giant cranes lifting these very substantial concrete sections into place for the new bridge. View large.

Bridge building

It's been a while since I posted any photos of the work on our new bridge and it's a hive of activity. Best viewed large and other images in the PiPs. HFF and best wishes for the weekend, everyone.

More bridgeworks

The land-based end of the new bridge will connect to the large concrete construction at right. The existing road is behind all these works toward the trees. HFF, stay safe and best wishes for the weekend, everyone.

Bridge building

Over the past six months we've had bushfires, floods and most recently COVID-19, but despite that the new bridge construction has been progressing steadily, as this photo shows. The image in the PiP was taken in November, some 6 months prior. Best viewed large.

Bridge works

14 Nov 2019 37 42 587
Some months ago I posted an image of the first large barge arriving to work on a new bridge across the Clyde River (PiP1). Since then a second barge has arrived and work is progressing steadily - as seen in PiPs 2 and 3. HFF everyone. Explored.

Construction

06 Nov 2015 12 18 719
Sunset in Christchurch and the last images of this series. In the first note, the massive structure of the new "Grand Chancellor" hotel being erected: the previous 27 storey building had to be demolished after tipping sideways one metre! In the second note, building work is seen in all directions: the new bus interchange (see previous pano image) is the low building with the reddish wall. HFF!

Sydney Opera House - way back!

24 Oct 2013 5 4 811
There have been some celebrations this week over the 40th anniversary of the opening of the Sydney Opera House. Which made it vaguely relevant to post this photo, taken from the Manly Ferry and with construction still having a long way to go in late 1965. The Opera House and the city both look a bit different these days! From an old Kodachrome II slide.

Construction site

19 Feb 2022 30 16 699
From an old slide, copied too small here long ago. This construction site was known, at the time, as Repstat - short for Replacement Station. The old Wilkes base, built by the USA during the 1958 International Geophysical Year, was across the bay behind the ship, but mostly buried under metres of snow and in an unsafe condition. We spent a fortnight working here and, when we left, had erected a line of huts up the right of the road (one of the DUKWs on the road). The new station was later named Casey, but It has since been rebuilt yet again in a much more substantial form. You can see it here (also a 48 hour webcam video). While we were there, another of the Lauritzen Line "Dan" ships, the Thala Dan also arrived and we saw the very uncommon sight of two of them in an Antarctic port together (see PiP). Some of the old Wilkes base buildings are visible on the horizon in this image. UPDATE FOOTNOTE: I've updated this image, but unfortunately I'm unable to put it in a larger copy (short of creating a new posting). I've updated it because Today (19 Feb 2022) is the 54th anniversary of the official opening of the Casey station that we helped build.
