Passing showers

27 Dec 2024 28 23 148
This weather formation caught my eye as I headed along the road. It passed alongside me, staying along the ranges toward the coast. Either way, it seems a good image for the last Friday fence of 2024. Wishing everyone a very Happy Fence Friday and all the best for the coming year.

WF2 radar

14 Mar 2024 29 33 284
Copied from an old 1965 slide. This WF2 (WF short for Wind Finding) radar was in a suburb of Melbourne not far from Essendon Airport. It was used to train people such as me and had a range of 200km. I find myself thinking how inappropriate it would now be considered to have such a potentially dangerous beast so close to houses, with just a fence (seen best viewed large) between. In the PiP, a weather balloon launched from the same site, with (from the top) the 350gm balloon, a parachute, the radar reflector and the radiosonde to send back atmospheric data. Happy Fence Friday and have a good weekend, everyone.

Away!

22 Feb 2021 27 26 446
From an old slide. That's me, launching a weather balloon in the Prince Charles Mountains back in 1966. On the tripod I have a theodolite for taking measurements of the balloon's position, allowing me to calculate the upper winds in the area. The PiP shows me taking temperature readings from instruments mounted on the main living caravan - the coldest we experienced on the trip was -39C, accompanied by about 60km/hr winds. The rounded van in the PiP is the second living caravan Unfortunately, Pauline's health is not good, so I expect to be largely absent from ipernity in the coming weeks. I shall drop by when there is an opportunity and maybe even post an occasional image. Best wishes, everyone.

Looking North

Looking northward up the coast at Moruya Heads, with some large ocean swells following wild weather. Best viewed large (click image). Explored.

Stormy weather

From the lookout at Moruya Heads. A second image in the PiP (clickable). Here's a musical link. HFF, stay safe and have a great weekend, everyone. Explored.

Ocean view

30 Jul 2020 22 16 277
The lookout alongside the old cemetery gives great ocean views (also PiP), even in bad weather. I note (centre image) the ocean is stained by floodwaters from the adjacent Moruya River, following a deluge of rain. View large (click image). HFF, stay safe everyone and have a great weekend.

Wild weather

28 Jul 2020 41 20 355
As I mentioned with my previous image, over the past few days we've had some wild weather, brought to us by a weather system known as an "east coast low". There have been gale force winds and buckets of rain - at our place 280mm in three days. Today, while Pauline had her weekly treatment, I returned to the headland at the mouth of the Moruya River, where there was still some light rain and a very big surf running. On the skyline, the gaps between the trees are the result of the ferocious bushfires at the start of the year. Best viewed large on black.

Ummm!

30 Sep 2019 41 30 606
Not at all sure that I'd have wanted to be on this "Dash 8" aircraft heading for a landing through clouds alongside those very close mountains! No, this is not done with selective colour. :-) A musical link seems appropriate. Explored.

Change coming

16 Feb 2019 26 37 591
At our local beach, with a cool change rolling in (the line of low cloud). Best viewed large.

Fog Bow, Macquarie Island

06 Feb 2019 31 19 593
When Ipernity member Herb Riddle recently posted a photo of a fog bow, it seemed I was one of the very few who had previously seen one. Herb asked if I had a photo from my sighting and this is it, taken on Kodachrome slide film at Macquarie Island (a very foggy place) in 1968. Maybe view large. Explored.

Stormy Monday

23 Apr 2018 28 21 421
It's Monday and I was prompted by the music to post this image. A well known song, but two tracks on this link - start at 5.25. I'd suggest large and loud. :-) Explored.

Breaking

14 Jan 2018 33 21 965
Waves on the beach and in the sky! A cold frontal change was moving up the coast, bringing a sudden change in wind direction and temperatures. This seemed a good b/w subject and is best viewed on black. Explored.

Weather coming in

28 Jun 2016 22 15 624
Heading north into the Blue Mountains, just as the first real snowfall of the season arrived. A great break away for a few days (meeting old friends), now slowly catching up. Explored.

On the road again

23 Jan 2016 49 27 908
Early morning and on the road from Te Anau to the west coast. Worth viewing large. This is the song that seems to fit. *update* Finally managed to get the position mapping to work. Explored.

Rolling in

09 Feb 2015 18 14 574
After a hot day, it's great when a cool change rolls in. Sometimes, as here, it is accompanied by a roll cloud. Best on black.

Change coming

10 Oct 2014 17 22 762
Taken on the southern tablelands of NSW, with a weather trough moving along the coast and beginning to come over the coastal ranges. HFF.

Balloon away

12 Sep 2012 466
From an old slide. Apart from other activities, whenever possible a weather balloon went up daily, to give some information on upper air flows in the Prince Charles Mountains area of Antarctica. Tracking was visual, by theodolite. In the background are a pair of Polaris "Sno Traveler" vehicles (and a motorcycle near the D4 on the right - I do not recall that it ever was used on the trip).

Nella in the morning!

22 Dec 2020 48 38 1043
From an old slide (and later re-copied larger - view large). The blizzard blew through the night and into next morning. When the drifting snow became less (the wind still blowing), we found the Nella Dan hard against the rocks on the shore with the engines at half speed to keep her there. During the night the wind had broken all the mooring cables and she began drifting backwards toward West Arm of the harbour. The captain drove her aground to prevent damage. (NB the tattered remains of flags). In the afternoon the wind dropped and she reversed off the rocks. She was a tough ship. Two days later, with the outgoing Mawson expedition aboard she sailed, leaving us to await her return in twelve months. For the background on the blizzard, see my previous image (shown in clickable PiP). Some fifty years later, a later Australian icebreaker had the same problem in a blizzard, but was blown aground on the far shore of the harbour - fortunately without major damage.
