Fire glow

Taken near our home. The foreground lighting from the street lamp behind me, the red glow from the nearby bushfire (at this stage about 8km away and being held back by fire crews). The morning after this image, as suggested by the Rural Fire Brigade, we left with some of our possessions as there is a risk the only access road could be cut by fire. We are now safe, but over the next few days are hoping to make a quick return visit to retrieve more items to safety in case the fire should come through - it is still out of control and over 73,000 ha at present (see PiP).
I shall be very infrequent on ipernity, but would like to extend my very real appreciation to all who have sent their messages of support for me and my wife. In these worrying times, believe me it does help. :-)

For the people in this area, an end to the drought would be their top wish. There already has been a bushfire along the ridge in the distance. For the sake of a musical link, I'll go with the sign. HFF and have a great weekend, everyone.

Fur seals on the beach below a lookout. Almost wiped out by the 19th century sealing trade, they now are protected and it's good to see their number increasing. Here's a musical link.

In the spotlight

Do you see him? Taken on a spotlighting tour of our local Botanic Gardens. About 25M up this old gumtree, there is a Greater Glider (one of our native gliding possums) blinking into the light from his hole in the trunk. He came out shortly afterwards and you will find him in the PiP (I'd suggest viewing large on black).
These were taken hand-held with the light of a wandering spotlight, which explains the poor qualtiy.

Taken on a spotlighting tour of our local Botanic Gardens, this is a Greater Glider - one of our native marsupial gliding possums. The long tail is used in the air as a rudder for steering. More about them here. Our guide spotted him by the reflection from his eyes as he peered from his sleeping hollow in the tree (next image/note)

These lorikeets were feeding in our neighbour's yard. They become quite tame.
