Church and fence

11 Jul 2024 31 24 228
The bus driver told us that this church was for a new religious faith begun by a Maori man in the early 20th century. The PiP showing an information sign at Cape Reinga gives more information: it was T.W. Ratana, who began the Ratana Church. This image complete with reflections from the bus windows. :-) Wishing everyone a Happy Fence Friday and a good weekend.

Uniting Church, Bundanoon

A small but pleasant sandstone wall in front of this timber walled church, reasonably typical of many in the forested areas of Australia. Wishing everyone a Happy Wednesday Wall.

In Bodalla

In Bodalla, All Saints church is an unmissable sight near the main road. Built in 1881, it looks as though it would be far more at home in the English countryside. See also PiPs. Wishing everyone a very Happy Fence Friday and a great weekend.

Church window

23 Mar 2021 25 16 285
The window at St Andrews Anglican church in Braidwood, where Pauline's life was celebrated with a beautiful memorial service yesterday. The organ is shown in a PiP. In the way things have been for some time, there was yet another surprise. Unfortunately, after days of heavy rain, the road to the cemetery where Pauline will be laid to rest has been badly affected and had already been cut by flooding at several places. As a consequence, only the funeral memorial service was able to be held, the funeral deferred until later and the rain still continuing heavily until today. We now are hoping to complete Pauline's funeral next week when hopefully the roads will again be usable.

Organ angles

We had seen Tromso's Arctic Cathedral from the ship on our northward trip (PiP1), so it was great to be able to visit it for a midnight concert on our return trip (PiPs 2,3,4). It is an impressive building, built from slabs of poured concrete. These are the cathedral's organ pipes, which of course call for a musical link. Explored.

Peace Cathedral

31 Jul 2019 22 20 366
The 'Peace Cathedral' in Bodo was built in 1956 to replace a church destroyed (with most of Bodo) during WW2. While it may look unexciting in concrete (see PiP 1), the interior is quite attractive (Pip 2). My visit was enhanced by a lovely organ recital (sorry, I didn't get a shot of the organ). I also was intrigued by the large woven rugs on the walls (PiP 2). Explored. Family health issues will limit my involvement on ipernity, so my apologies if I do not respond to your comments or visit your images - I shall try to do so as far as possible.

St Senara's Church

07 May 2019 25 12 514
We may have arrived in Zennor too early to visit the pub, but the nearby St Senara's Church invited a visit. On the wall was an old (and much repaired) sundial with the date 1737 (PiP 3) but the church and surrounding cemetery were clearly hundreds of years older.

St Bede's

26 Nov 2018 26 18 599
St Bede's in Braidwood was built from local granite in 1852. The funeral service for the Special Constables was held here, prior to them being buried in the local cemetery where a memorial column marks their grave (PiPs). Explored.

St Patrick's

30 Oct 2018 23 18 534
St Patrick's Catholic Church is probably the most substantial building in Araluen. I wondered if it dated from the gold mining days, when Araluen had some 35,000 people (now about 170) and over 40 hotels! Though the earlier St Patrick's did indeed date from the 1860s and actually began as one of those hotels, the current building is much more modern, dating from 1940.

Araluen letterboxes

27 Oct 2018 23 12 569
It's a while since I posted any letterboxes. We found these in Araluen, once a goldfield and now a quiet farming area. I coundn't see any name on the old church. Behind are some of the ranges which surround the valley. Explored.

The tin church

This metal church is a good example of 'bush' architecture from earlier days. HFF Explored.

Watching

Some horsey interest in a wandering photographer trying to capture a former country church. Best viewed large and more shots in notes. HFF

All Saints in Yandilla

Isolated old timber church in south west Queensland. Best viewed large, second image in note. By way of musical background, try this. HFF. Explored
