Near full moon

19 Aug 2024 41 29 272
As it's World Photography Day and almost a full moon ( that's tomorrow in my time zone), this image was almost in the "must take" category. Best viewed large.

Total lunar eclipse

09 Nov 2022 39 27 278
As I noted with my late night posting last night, we had a total lunar eclipse. This would be the longest I've seen, with the moon in total eclipse almost 1.5 hours and the overall event 5.5 hours! The moon became very dark indeed - this has the brightness boosted (check the ISO). Photos from the before and after are in the PiPs. View full screen. It seems this will be the last total lunar eclipse to be seen anywhere until 2025.

Near full

It's to be a full moon tonight, but I took this two nights ago when the slight remaining shadow gives a little more contour interest.

Moon and Jupiter

22 Aug 2021 23 16 288
Tonight there was a clear sky for a great view of the full (blue) moon and Jupiter. It seems a "blue moon" is when there are two full moons in the one month. Here's a musical link.

Near full

24 Jul 2021 21 14 211
To my surprise, the clouds cleared enough for me to grab this image of the near-full moon. Photo taken hand-held and cropped.

Early stage, lunar eclipse

26 May 2021 31 27 420
I was delighted tonight to see the entirety of the lunar eclipse, without any cloud interference. Too many photos, most yet to be properly reviewed, but it's now late at night so I'll post just this one for the moment.

Tonight's moon

22 May 2021 28 35 228
I understand that tonight's moon is officially the "Waxing Gibbous" phase. Either way, it's lovely and clear. I'm just hoping that the sky is as clear next Wednesday night for the total lunar eclipse we're due to see in full, though the weather forecast isn't promising.

Evening conjunction

13 Jan 2021 36 23 268
So good that the uploader is again working! I had to try it, though I've had fairly few opportunities for taking photos lately and I'll largely be going back to reposting file material. This was a new image though, of the much publicised conjunction between Jupiter (way down at the foot) and Saturn to its right. Down here in the Southern Hemisphere where it's summer, it wasn't near dark until they were slipping below the horizon - as seen here. Although this was taken on 17 December and the closest point wasn't until 21 December (when we had clouds and rain), it does seem to me that the "meeting" was somewhat over-sold! Best viewed large.

Lunar halo

02 Sep 2020 31 44 333
I was very impressed to see this great lunar halo last night, formed by a layer of icy high level cirrostratus cloud. On the left are Jupiter and Saturn, sitting just below Sagittarius (see PiPs). Best viewed large on black.

Mars and eclipse

28 Jul 2018 26 20 373
The moon heading into eclipse, with Mars nearby. Taken shortly before moonset (in Eastern Australia). K1 in crop mode, HDR. Best viewed large on black

Last night's moon

27 May 2018 24 23 801
A clear sky and a bright moon made an irresistible combination. Here's a matching musical link.

Passing through

29 Aug 2017 13 25 576
Taking a break in my China series to post this image from last night of the Space Station (ISS) passing directly overhead, just past the moon and through Scorpio. Best to view large on black, there's also a note.

Near "supermoon"

13 Nov 2016 21 19 597
Two nights before the "supermoon", the closest full moon since 1948 and for some many years to come. I gather that a combination of orbital factors are bringing the moon about 30,000km closer than is usual, so consequently it appears a little larger. Best viewed large on a black background. Here's a musical link.

Waxing moon

23 Oct 2016 24 15 588
Hey, it's up there! Explored, too. Well, kinda... :-)

A pleasant conjunction

23 Jun 2015 22 9 697
Early evening, and the waxing crescent moon and planets (Venus and Jupiter) made a pleasant conjunction as they set behind trees in the west. A musical link here.

The eclipse

09 Oct 2014 21 15 727
The media were full of hyperbole about a "blood moon" in the sky. They were referring to a lunar eclipse, where the reddish light reflected from sunsets on the earth would be the only lighting of the part of the moon in the earth's shadow. Although we were perfectly placed to see the entire show, clouds prevented a view of all but the final stage. This was taken with the Pentax and 400mm Tokina lens. A few years ago I managed to catch a full lunar eclipse sequence, with my old Lumix FZ20: you can see that in the note.

Moon and Jupiter conjunction

03 Jun 2013 9 6 710
A pleasing conjunction between the first quarter moon and Jupiter. I'd have needed more exposure to show Jupiter's moons. Does anyone know why the keywords on photos transferred from "the other site" are randomised and is there any way to prevent it? Taken with RMC Tokina 400mm 5.6 with Kenko X1.4 TC.
