Fog Bow, Macquarie Island

06 Feb 2019 31 19 593
When Ipernity member Herb Riddle recently posted a photo of a fog bow, it seemed I was one of the very few who had previously seen one. Herb asked if I had a photo from my sighting and this is it, taken on Kodachrome slide film at Macquarie Island (a very foggy place) in 1968. Maybe view large. Explored.

Yes, it's colour

There's not a lot of colour to be seen in this foggy, frosty and drought-affected early morning scene from the NSW Southern Tablelands. Best viewed large, maybe while listening to this link. HFF and have a great weekend, everyone. Explored.

Fog rolling through

Unusual daytime fog rolling through our local National Park and the Spotted Gums, with a couple of the local 'roos watching me. Explored.

Fog rolling in

18 Mar 2016 21 20 634
On a warm sunny day (about 28C) the sea fog suddenly rolled in and filled the bay - a most unusual event. HFF. Here's how to make the most of fog.

A foggy day

Back on the west coast of New Zealand's south island. This musical link at least matches the weather. Explored.

Dawn at the dam

Foggy dawn light over a farm dam on the chilly tablelands. Best viewed large. HFF

Fosts and frogs

21 May 2015 57 30 931
Taken up on the chilly tablelands. Some years ago, a local TV weather presenter became famously tongue-tied, trying to say "frosts and fogs" but instead giving the title for this image. For a musical background, try this. Best seen large on black. HFF! Explored.

Blue Rocks Reflections

13 Nov 2014 68 38 1116
Totally out of sequence with any of my postings, this is Blue Rocks in Nova Scotia, Canada. I was prompted to post it when my ipernity friend dubonnet(sharon) recently had an image www.ipernity.com/doc/dubonnet/35782077 from precisely the same position - refreshing pleasant memories of a visit some years ago. HFF! Explored.

Through the Fog

07 Nov 2013 6 3 588
I guess a ship's rail counts as a fence. Happy Fence Friday! I couldn't resist this stanza from Samuel Taylor Coleridge's "The Rime of the Ancient Mariner": And now there came both mist and snow, And it grew wondrous cold: And ice, mast-high, came floating by, As green as emerald....

Seastack Landscape #1

27 Oct 2013 13 7 550
After leaving the Macquarie Island station, we travelled along the coast a little in the zodiacs, taking photos of the scenery and wildlife. It was somewhat surreal to be floating among these seastacks in the fog and mist. If you are interested in the rocks, for details (they are quite unique) refer to the note with my photo of the Rockhopper penguins .

The beach on the east coast of the island, between the living area and working areas of the station, with resting elephant seals and wandering penguins.

Let's do the time warp....

Excuse me while I use this balloon launch to also launch into reminiscence. The Met. Office staff treated me as a VIP visitor and gave me a great personal tour of the office, new equipment and the station itself (visiting areas that tourists don't normally reach). This balloon launch shows how technology has moved ahead in the 37 years since my term on the island. The inset note shows how it was done in the "old days", with a giant radar reflector. No need for that now, the radiosonde contains a GPS which sends back the height and position. Intstead of two people frantically calculating results for temperatures and wind, that is now done with a computer. So the sequence becomes launch, then return indoors for a coffee. The other change I really noted was the far greater emphasis on safety - we didn't think about protective gear!

From one extreme to another

Copied from an old slide. After we were out of the storm and again travelling south. we found ourselves passing through fog, caused by light winds bringing warm moist air over colder ocean, early in January 1966.

Daybreak, Lake Albert

Daybreak adding colour to the mist and fog over Lake Albert - and some pelicans chasing breakfast. (Probably best viewed on black - press 'Z')

A Red Wattlebird ( Anthrochaera carunculata ) interrupted from its feast on nectar from the gum blossoms. The name is for the red wattles hanging just below where the ears should be. Tokina RMC 200/3.5 .

Foggy dawn, Lake Albert

As dawn arrived over the lakes, intermittent fog and mist rolled past. (Suggest view on black).
