Female Satin Bowerbird

I was surprised to look from the window and see this female Satin Bowerbird looking back up at me. I dashed off and grabbed the pocket camera to get this image (and some window reflections) while the bird itself left a calling card. :-)

Satin Bowerbird

Satin Bowerbirds are native to eastern Australia. This is a female or young male - very different from the adult male (7 years +) which has a beautiful almost metallic blue/black colour. For those in other parts of the world, they are roughly the size of pigeons. They also are absolute dynamite at stripping fruit trees, as this one was doing in a neighbour's tree. Best viewed large, also see PiPs.

Golden Orb Spider

Today I was out with my local Landcare group, removing weeds in the nature reserve, when I almost walked face first into this spider, hanging in a substantial web. It is a female Golden Orb spider - the male is quite tiny in comparison. Explored.

What's that?

You're trying to tell me this tasty bush is part of your garden? One of the "local mob" of Eastern Grey kangaroos who inhabit our area. Here's an old song from a TV show to go with this. Explored.

The Kings

A pair of King Parrots, the female nearest (no, she does not become a queen). A short while previously she appeared to have reprimanded her more colourful partner for having too much seed on his beak (see note). These are wild birds at our feeder. Here's a musical link - a little tenuous, I admit. :-) Explored.

Female Superb Fairy Wren

More's the pity the female doesn't have more colour, more's the pity also that she persisted in hopping about among the shrubbery instead of coming into the clear...

Scarlet Robin (F)

To confuse things, the females of both the Scarlet Robin and Flame Robin are largely dull beige colours - but the Scarlets do have a pinkish apron.

Superb Blue Wren (female)

This female Superb Blue Wren was jumping around the bushes with the male, so I presume they are a pair. An interesting contrast in plumage! Vivitar 135mm 2.8.
