Regal visit

24 Sep 2018 42 34 755
A King Parrot (male) visiting our bird feeding bowl. These are native to the Australian east coast. Tomorrow I am heading away for a while, and expect limited internet. Enjoy yourselves everyone. Explored.

The big fella

13 Feb 2018 34 36 857
This "old man" Eastern Grey kangaroo is the largest in our local group, photographed here in the nearby nature reserve. Fully upright, I would expect he would stand about 1.5 metres. Although not aggressive, kangaroos can be quite dangerous if feeling threatened - see this little video (skip to about 1.20 for a clear view of the action). Explored.

Under the streetlight

Another animal image, this young male Grey Kangaroo was grazing on the nature strip alongside the street outside our house this evening.

Visiting Wood Ducks

17 Apr 2016 14 11 493
A family of these ducks came visiting from the nearby nature reserve. The colour indicates that these are two males. The PiP has an image (at the right) of the female for comparison.

Better than coats

24 Feb 2016 19 19 513
A bull NZ Fur Seal. These and other fur seals around Australia and New Zealand were almost exterminated in the 19th century for their furs - to make coats. Thankfully their numbers now are recovering (to the dismay of some professional fishing people). Explored.

The Kings

14 Jun 2015 42 19 793
A pair of King Parrots, the female nearest (no, she does not become a queen). A short while previously she appeared to have reprimanded her more colourful partner for having too much seed on his beak (see note). These are wild birds at our feeder. Here's a musical link - a little tenuous, I admit. :-) Explored.

The visiting King

14 Mar 2015 23 30 752
A local King Parrot who often comes visiting for some seed and a drink. Another shot of him shortly after in the note, when some seeds stuck to his wet beak. Explored. The video is unrelated, but from the small island of Ambrym, part of the island nation of Vanuatu devastated this weekend by a huge Category 5 cyclone. We visited there some years ago, shortly after a Category 1 cyclone, and they had been badly hit by that. All I can say is that our thoughts are very much with the lovely people there, in the absence (yet) of news. This is the traditional 'Rom Dance' : the costumes are used once then discarded so that spirits do not linger. The other men wear little more than 'nambas', essentially a p*n*s sheath. www.youtube.com/watch?v=vD30nwKuF-U

Scarlet Robin (M)

30 Aug 2013 4 3 772
These cheery little birds were frequent visitors to our farm. The essential visual clue to differentiating these from the Flame Robin is that those are charcoal grey where these are black.

Macquarie Island 1968: Elephant seal pups

22 Jan 2013 4 2 741
Young male elephant seals (Mirounga leonina) spend their days either sleeping or practicing fighting (done by bashing together, as was happening here till I interrupted). Fighting skills will become important later in life, when they try to attain "Beachmaster" status. From an old Kodachrome slide taken with a Minolta SR1 and Auto Rokkor 1.4 58mm lens..

Superb Blue Wren (male)

I photographed this male Superb Blue Wren in a Melbourne back yard. They are quite tiny and almost constantly moving. Vivitar (Komine) 135/2.8
