Duyfken replica

After the Dutch East India Company (VOC) displaced the Portuguese from the East Indies, the original Duyfken officially became the first European vessel to visit the Australian coast in 1606, sailing along the south coast of New Guinea to reach Cape York in Australia's north. This replica of the Duyfken is now in the Maritime Museum in Sydney. Of course, it is very possible that there may have been earlier European visitors, as I outline in this Article I posted some time ago.

Fokker Dr.I

This Fokker Dr.1 Dreidecker (Triplane) replica was at the Omaka Aviation Heritage Centre near Blenheim. This is an excellent aviation museum with many of the exhibits airworthy and flown at airshows, as are more of the Jasta seen (in the PiP note) parked indoors. I couldn't resist this musical clip which has video of an original Dr.1 with its most famous exponent.

Return of the 'Rusich'

In early 2013, it was something of a surprise to find a Viking longboat in our local marina (see note). It proved to be the Rusich , built and sailed to Australia by a group of keen Russian adventurers. The Rusich continued to a Wooden Boat Show in Hobart - and then reappeared briefly in our marina late in 2013. After sailing further north, it has since been transported to Europe (Amsterdam) by ship. There are plans for a major trip through Europe, from the North Sea to the Mediterannean. The Rusich has its own "Facebook" page for anyone wishing to follow its travels.: www.facebook.com/pages/Rusich/132847630234849 . Explored

"Notorious" leaving Batemans Bay

23 Jul 2013 9 8 837
It was great to see and inspect the replica Portuguese caravel Notorious while it was visiting Batemans Bay, but it was overwhelming to actually see it putting to sea. I was unable to put aside the thought that, in all probability, it would have been nearly 500 years since such a ship had travelled our coast! The second and third photos (in notes) show the ship passing offshore islands.
