Wollongong Main Beach

14 Feb 2023 31 21 245
The beach was being well used, with surfers chasing waves and surf classes for groups of youngsters. In the distance the steelworks which come to mind for most Australians when Wollongong is mentioned. The thunderstorm, far away, had weakened when it arrived several hours later. Stitched panorama. 'The Gong' beach and fence

14 Apr 2022 29 27 261
As I noted with my previous posting, Wollongong is often known locally as "The Gong". This is the main Wollongong beach at dawn, looking southward toward Port Kembla. In the surf behind the fence, there are a number of early morning surfers and a fishing boat at far left (viewing large may be helpful). Happy Fence Friday and best wishes for the weekend, everyone.

Surf Boat races

01 Mar 2020 34 47 375
Following my previous images, more on the Surf Boat races held at our local beach due to wild weather at the site originally planned. The races consist of rowing out to and around offshore buoys, then heading back to shore - catching and surfing a good wave being an important part of the process. My first PiP shows a boat (fourth in) "getting it wrong" while surfing, luckily being able to regain control (second PiP) and the final PiP shows a boat surfing a wave well. By way of background information, Surf Boats were developed in the early 20th century by Australian surf life saving clubs, to rescue endangered beach swimmers. The surf life saving clubs then began having competitions with them. The beach safety role now has been taken by jet skis and zodiacs, but Surf Boat competitions remain very popular in Australia and New Zealand. I've been busy with "home duties" lately, which has kept me from ipernity, but I'm very glad to say that Pauline's condition has improved over the time since she returned home (maybe too early) from hospital.

Through the surf

As the old saying goes, "it's an ill wind...". A major Surf Boat competition was being held at another beach, but that was too exposed to dangerous surf created by a passing tropical cyclone - so the event was moved for the day to our normally quiet beach! I've never seen such a crowd or event here (see PiPs). More photos to come shortly. It was quite a surprise when dangerous surf conditions led to a major surf boat competition being relocated to our normally quiet beach! More details with my main image.

Congo Beach #1

No, I haven't been travelling to Africa, for some reason a beach locale near Moruya in NSW is named Congo! Explored. My involvement on ipernity is limited at present, so my apologies if I do not respond to your comments or visit your images - I shall try to do so as far as possible.

Down the beach

The sign tells the name of the beach - and, if you'd been there today, you'd have had all that golden sand to yourself. HFF and have a great weekend, everyone.

Sand and surf

02 Apr 2018 23 18 475
Plenty of sand and surf here! That surf looks a bit risky though, with at least two large rips visible. Anyway, if surfing appeals, here's a song to go with it. Best viewed large. Explored.
