Desert flower

12 Dec 2023 23 14 220
Today it struck me that I posted few flower images when I did the big outback trip earlier this year. This little flower was growing on the top of a large sand dune near Birdsville in western Queensland. I think it's a Butterfly bush (Petalostylus labicheoides).

Yellow Paper Daisy

This is an Australian native flower, between 25 and 50mm across. These were in our local Botanic Gardens and seemed (when taken) a good way to wrap up the year and to provide a bright first posting for 2023.

Ovens Wattle

14 Sep 2021 34 21 272
The wattles are having a spectacular flowering at present. I photographed this one up on the Southern Tablelands and thought at the time it was a Black Wattle. When I looked at the photos and compared them with the references, I realised it is a much less common Ovens Wattle, found only in a relatively small area up that way. An image of the whole tree in the PiP.

A native pea flower

Eastern Australia has many native plant types with yellow pea-shaped flowers. I claim no expertise on plant ID, but I've had my guess in the Keywords. Either way, should anyone else wish to hunt for these, they were near the lookout in the Jerrawangala National Park that I showed a few images ago.

It's Wattle Day

01 Sep 2020 29 15 240
In Australia, the 1st of September is the beginning of the Spring season and is known as National Wattle Day, because the wattles (our national flower) are flowering. If I'm right with my ID, this is a Sweet Wattle (Acacia suaveolens). We saw these flowers in a National Park, during our recent drive.

Orange immortelle

22 Oct 2017 31 19 661
Another native wildflower, with the unusual name "Orange Immortelle" (curse the translator at times- see heading) that enjoys the drier sandy areas of Australia, such as the Mallee area of Victoria. Explored.

Rosebud

We have had a very wet month, but I managed to grab this shot between showers. Explored. Here's a musical link, which may seem a little obscure to some. It becomes a little clearer at 5.23.

Pity about the post :-)

Seeing many of these oilseed crops on our travels. This music link will be no surprise. HFF. Explored.

Yellow Tasmanian Flowers .... Ooops!

22 Jan 2014 10 9 726
[Edited] These flowers were growing on small shrubs in parts of the Tasmanian west coast. I had identified them as a Tasmanian native plant, but several ipernity members picked them as Canary Broom Genista monspessulana . After some research, I must agree with them. That means that these pleasant looking flowers belong to particularly invasive plant which has been declared a "Weed of National Importance": about as nasty as can be found..... At least I didn't try to collect any cuttings or seeds!

17:100 Strangers - Unexpected Technical Difficult…

09 May 2013 451
Jeremy was working on the Information Stall at the Michelago May Fair and, with his bright yellow Rural Fire Service outfit was an instant and obvious choice for a portrait shot. He told me he has been a member of the nearby Colinton Volunteer Rural Fire Brigade since 2002. He was very interested in the “100 Strangers” project and entirely willing to be a subject. And that was where the problem began, when I took the portrait shot you see here under the bright orange marquee, then tried for a wider shot of him in his “yellows”. Because my camera usually has very good auto white balance, I use that as my default setting. But the combination of orange/yellow clothing, an orange tent over the top and a purple tent in the background was obviously too extreme for the system and led to some very unlikely (over-blue) results. At that stage, Jeremy had several people waiting for his time and I was called away, so I agreed to chat with him again later. Several hours later we again caught up and I found that not only is he also a keen photographer himself but that he also is a self-employed graphic designer. Just my luck, when I demonstrate my errors in front of a subject, that they should turn out to be an expert! Anyway, we had another crack at the full length shot and again found a very blue cast: but I was shooting in RAW, so correcting the colour balance was not too difficult and gave the second shot. It was a useful lesson for me on unexpected colour casts. I greatly appreciate your patience with these shots Jeremy, and hope you approve of the results. This picture is 17 in my 100 strangers project. Find out more about the project and see pictures taken by other photographers at the 100 Strangers Flickr Group page
