New Fish Markets

16 Mar 2025 26 24 84
Unlikely as it may seem, the Fish Markets are among Sydney's more visited tourist attractions, particularly for visitors from Asia. The current Fish Markets are old and inadequate (just off to the left of this image), so that large sweeping building is being constructed to house new ones. It is due for completion late this year. Meanwhile, there are benches in the foreground, so it's time to wish everyone a Happy Bench Monday - and a good week to follow.

Nelligen Bridge

09 Mar 2023 32 36 271
The bridge at Nelligen, suffering from concrete rot and being replaced by a new bridge - seen under construction in the background (view large to see better). The new bridge has now come into operation and the old bridge is under demolition. LATE ADDITIONAL NOTE: Unfortunately the road layout meant that there was no better access to show the development of the new bridge, structurally near complete. Another week gone and it's time to wish everyone a Happy Fence Friday and a great weekend.

The new bridge - from the south.

The new Batemans Bay bridge from the southern side, with a mural commemorating the old bridge previously here. Best viewed large. See also PiP (featuring a shopping trolley).

Finishing roadworks

16 Sep 2021 34 31 297
Back to the bridge! It's the details that take time, such as finishing the ancillary roads, surfacing etc. About an hour after taking this, there was a spectacular sunset - sometimes it's about timing! :-) Another week gone, I hope you're all in good health and about to have an enjoyable weekend. For now, HFF, everyone.

The new bridge at sunset

With the new bridge structurally complete and only the concrete piers of the old bridge remaining, it seemed a good time to show the wider view - best seen large. Another week has flown by, so it's time for me to wish everyone a Happy Fence Friday and a safe and enjoyable weekend.

Next section?

05 Aug 2021 41 42 278
It seems likely the next stage of demolition of the old bridge will be to remove this remaining end section, with the large crane working from the barge. In the background on the right, the daily tourist boat is heading up the river. Wishing everyone a Happy Fence Friday and a safe and enjoyable weekend.

The last has gone

22 Jul 2021 33 31 350
The final box span has now been removed from the old bridge (see earlier images in this series). Work is now underway to begin the removal of the fixed end sections (see PiP). Wishing everyone a very Happy Fence Friday, followed by a healthy and enjoyable weekend.

One gone!

08 Jul 2021 44 39 349
The barge in the background (R) has removed one of the two iconic towers from the old bridge, with the span on which it stood, and taken it to the shore where it is being dismantled. Meanwhile, the concrete counterweight of the other lifting tower has now been removed. Best viewed large, I'd suggest. If you have a few moments, I highly recommend the drone photos in this link showing the barge commencing the span removal. Another week gone! All my best wishes for a very Happy Fence Friday and for a safe and enjoyable weekend, everyone.

Two spans down

01 Jul 2021 36 42 274
Best viewed large. Our new bridge and the old one in the process of being dismantled, at this stage with two of the spans removed - interestingly they are removed intact by bringing a barge beneath them at low tide, then floating them away to shore when the barge lifts with the tide. HFF and best wishes for a safe and enjoyable weekend, everyone.

Bridges and Bay

28 May 2021 45 42 392
The new bridge at left, looking out into Batemans Bay past the old bridge which is now being dismantled. The image in the PiP (also below) shows the barge which will handle most of the dismantling, with the small jetty specially built to land the bridge material. Well, it's Friday again, so I wish everyone a very Happy Fence Friday and a safe and enjoyable weekend.

Two bridges and a boat

04 Mar 2021 40 35 328
While heading into town, I found myself near the front of the queue of cars stopped when our lifting bridge opened for the tourist boat (at right) to pass through the gap in the roadway beyond the boom gate. The new bridge is near complete, with work mainly now on finalising the access roadworks. It is expected to be fully open by Easter. I'm afraid I still have little spare time, so activity in photography or online is very limited at present. HFF and best wishes for the weekend, everyone.

Old and New

12 Nov 2020 49 74 490
It's been a few weeks since I posted on our new local bridge under construction. As can be seen, apart from a section on the far side, the main structure is now almost complete. It's Friday again, so best wishes for the weekend and stay safe, everyone. Not to mention a HFF to all!

Hanging out at the Bay

27 Aug 2020 44 32 372
Batemans Bay is getting a new bridge. I am fascinated how far this section is able to cantilever outward as it progresses to joining the next. Taken in the morning, another from the other side in the afternoon light is included in a PiP, as is another with more of the new pylons. Best viewed large. Well it's HFF! Best wishes for the weekend, everyone.

Young calf

18 Aug 2020 41 22 364
Lately, when seeing young calves in our nearby rural areas, I've been reminded that July and August was the calving season on our former rural property. Sometimes people ask and yes , I do miss our animals! Hence this photo from the archives. Explored.

Bridge building

01 Jun 2020 34 21 366
Over the past six months we've had bushfires, floods and most recently COVID-19, but despite that the new bridge construction has been progressing steadily, as this photo shows. The image in the PiP was taken in November, some 6 months prior. Best viewed large.
