Jellyfish

04 Oct 2022 22 35 198
These jellyfish were swimming around in the Fremantle Boat Harbour. From a quick search, I'm fairly sure these are a species commonly called a "Jimble" , found around the southern coasts of Australia. Those long tails can sting, but although that can be painful it is not dangerous (unlike some tropical species).

Whale watching?

18 Apr 2022 26 21 241
An improvised bench at a great spot for whale watching. Eden is famous for its whaling in earlier days (thankfully now finished) and now is popular for watching the annual whale migration. The PiP shows the view from the same spot. A Happy Bench Monday to all.

North Head, Moruya

29 Jan 2020 26 18 470
Today, while Pauline had her treatment, I took a short drive to the breakwater at the North Head of the Moruya River. While there, a helicopter passed overhead with a fire-fighting water bucket and filled it nearby (see PiP), en route to the adjacent bushfires. Explored.

Lofoten view

Somewhere in Norway's Lofoten Islands between Harstad and Svolvaer. The weather wasn't perfect, but it certainly could have been worse! View on black.

The title of this image may not be obvious, but it's the name of this coastal freighter we passed near Norway's Lofoten Islands. Best viewed large. Here's a musical link. Explored.

The Ice City

12 Jan 2014 16 4 674
This "Ice City" with ice skyscrapers appeared over the horizon as we travelled late at night near the coast of East Antarctica. Taken on long zoom, it was in fact even further away than it appeared, but had been raised above the horizon and stretched upward by the effect of temperature inversions above the cold sea, to create what is called a "Mirage Fata Morgana". When we eventually reached the iceberg, it was little different from the one at right: the magical effect disappeared with proximity.

Midnight Sunset

17 Jan 2014 18 8 694
Near the coastline of East Antarctica at about midnight on Midsummer's Day, with 'sunset' at the Antarctic Circle travelling eastward along the horizon to the south and reflected on clouds and icebergs to the north. I like it on black (press Z).

Regal visit

16 Aug 2012 2 444
From an old 1966 slide. At about Midwinter, an Emperor penguin paid an unexpected visit. After a stroll around the harbour it wandered away again.

Dog teams on the sea ice

09 Aug 2013 436
From one of the gritty "home developed" Ektachrome slides taken in 1966. Out on the sea ice among the islands near Mawson, for a practice run with the dog teams.

View from the office window

15 Aug 2012 420
From an old 1966 slide. This was the view from the meteorological office window as midwinter drew around. Looking across the frozen harbour toward the north, with icebergs showing as mirages.

Strawberry ice cream?

From an old slide. Sea ice and icebergs lit by the sunset.

Sea ice sunset

From an old slide, January 1966. Again at sea and passing through open sea ice at sunset.
