Portrait with baby

I had intended to post this image earlier, as it was taken in the village we visited on the Bolaven Plateau in southern Laos. This lady was happy to have her portrait taken, even if the baby was not. What I did not know was that when I showed her the photo on the camera, which she found really funny, one of my companions took a photo of both of us (see PiP).
Cock-a-doodle

In the southern Laos village, I found this impressive cock which just had to be photographed. At the time I took this I'd never heard of Happy Fence Friday, but it certainly fits the theme. HFF, stay safe and have a great weekend, everyone.
Drying Cardamom

Maybe you enjoy the spice known as Cardamom? It is grown in various tropical parts of Asia, including Laos. Once harvested, in the form of pods, it needs to be dried. There are various means of doing that, but in this Lao village it was done the traditional way.
This lady is working on a shelf above a smouldering fire, drying out the seeds taken from those pods hanging on the sides of this special purpose hut. It was fiendishly hot (she was bathed in perspiration) and very smoky inside: how she could look so cheerful for the camera was beyond me! I really had to feel for the people of rural Laos, living such hard lives compared to our western world, while in one of the world's lowest income countries.
View this large on black and spare a moment's thought when next buying spices!
I'm very flattered that this image has been selected for inclusion on the Ipernity Homepage.
Local transport

While we were in the southern Laos village (see previous) what I presume to be the community transport arrived with a group of passengers who appeared to have been at the local shops or markets. (Another image in the PiP). Vehicles such as this were fairly common and probably can be used for multiple roles. The map position is generalised to the Bolaven Plateau.
Coffee!!

For a caffeine addict such as me, there could be few crops more important than coffee. The same village as the Meeting Place (previous image) and as defended by the superheroes (next image and PiP) grows coffee. These are new coffee plant seedlings.
HFF, stay safe and best wishes for the weekend, everyone.

These four superheroes posed with their crossbows to defend their village from the wandering western photographers. :-) This village (previous image of the 'Meeting Place') also grows coffee (see previous image / PiP). On the Bolaven Plateau in southern Laos (map location is approximate).
HFF, stay safe and best wishes for the weekend, everyone.
Repairs

Down the road from the school, these village men were busily repairing a net. Nets such as this are used to capture birds for eating and, in that regard, it must be recognised that these areas largely operate on a subsistence economy.

This was the view sideways from the the road through the little village (from the same position as the PiP).

This little village is up in the mountains to the west of Phonsavan and that is the main road. I've tried to locate this on the map, but without success. Either way, we stopped here for a visit and to meet some of the local residents. The (clickable) PiP is taken looking past the house to the right from the same position.

It was interesting to see the multi-lingual signage, such as this Post Office at a little village. I was very struck by the amount of advertising being given to mobile phones (3G when this was taken). I should add that the coverage (with my phone) was surprisingly good everywhere we went, despite the mountainous terrain.

Huts in the Laos village of Kiokacham (spelling is variable). A traditional hut in the foreground, behind is a more recent build, from the Russian period following the SE Asian war, identifiable by its concrete block construction. Also evident is the satellite dish, as far as I could gather also from the Russian period and used for communications.

A traditional house in a village of the Hmong people, not far from Luang Prabang. A second (clickable) image in the PiP. HFF everyone, stay safe and best wishes for the weekend.

These men in the village of Xay Oudom were repairing a weighted net used to catch birds. It's a subsistence lifestyle in the highland villages of Laos. See the note to meet some of the village women. Well, this seems an appropriate musical link.

We stopped in the highlands of Laos to look around this village. It was interesting to see how the dwellings are changing from the traditional to either painted timber or (sometimes) concrete blocks. One to view large.
Explored.
