1694 brick house , with shell hood maybe added in 1714, when the widow of the governor of bombay bought the place. the ironwork definitely dates from then, it bears her initials, and is by robert bakewell. stepney green was obviously a very civilised place to live once: since then it's had more downs than ups, and is now a bubble of gentility amongst traditional east end poverty.
