built 1835-6 by barry, using dance's 1806 portico but jazzing it up a bit ; in 1888 salter added the unfortunate upper floors and extended sideways too. in 1937 more damage was done with the end pavilions.

originally built without the windows in 1812, this was a floorcloth factory, producing the georgian equivalent to lino. huge sheets of canvas were painted time after time with patterns in oil paint, being hung up to dry in this manufactory. the layers of paint built up to quite a thickness, being polished with pumice between coats. a very few example can be found in country houses, often black and white simulating marble. later converted to beer bottling, and given windows in the 1970s to become council offices
