the pomegranate tree from dame alice owen's coat of arms appears several times on the brewers estate, here on e. h. martineau's tenement flats of 1882. she was the c17 donor of a large estate of land here, given as thanks for a narrow escape from death whilst young which left an arrow sticking through her hat. after becoming a rich widow she started a school and almshouse on the site of the incident, and left the surrounding fields in the hands of the brewers livery company.
