excellent modern replacement carvings on the buttresses south of the choir , c.2011. these are low down replacements of destroyed monsters, and show great spirit; brilliant sculptor, and good that the cathedral would pay for details that would be missed by most tourists, being hidden away in the gap between the transepts. here avarice clutches a bag of coins with one bitten between his teeth

the memorial to thomas freke +1769 is attributed to the elder bacon. closer inspection shows that at least part of it is made unusually of plaster, which makes one wonder how many more such monuments could be made of this cheap material.
