built by william edge, begun 1622, it has long been argued that inigo jones had a hand in the design, but recent discoveries reveal that the owner sir roger townsend took local mason william edge to see buildings by jones in newmarket and london. the central doorway is an alteration of c.1680. the house is not open to the public, but can be seen up the avenue from the church.

the priest's porch to the south of the chancel is the only big difference made when clark and holland rebuilt the church in 1868. it now acts asw the organ chamber.

the early c21 west gallery is carved with local scenes, including the hunt of a fox - he's on the corner here - reminding me of the watching loft at st.albans. an excellent idea well carried out, even if foxhunting is an unpleasantly brutal and barbaric pastime that we are well shot of.
