foundation stone of the saxon chapel reading "duke odda had this royal hall built and dedicated to the holy trinity for the sake of the soul of his brother aelfric whose soul ascended from here. bishop ealdred dedicated it the second of the ides of april in the fourteenth year of the reign of edward king of the english" i.e., 12 april 1056. it is now in the ashmolean museum.
