martello towers, folkestone

a string of martello towers runs through folkestone and on towards dover: these two are the easternmost of the 1806 kent series built to plans by col. twiss and capt. ford, based on the torre della mortella on corsica, which had defied english firepower so well in 1794. this clifftop site is also home to a roman villa and ww II defences.
