this glass in the south wall of the nave dates from 1897, very old fashioned for the date, and greets you on entry.

in fact six barrows line the top of the ridge, visible for miles. two were excavated in 1866 by the duchess of berry, in exile from france, and were found to contain sitting skeletons, one male, one female, with antlers resting on each shoulder, a magical and evocative image. I hope that the other four retain similar occupants, sitting in protection of the empty wild valleys around here since the early bronze age.

the victorians decided that the old font wasn't good enough after seven centuries, and when crickmay restored the church in 1878 got him to provide this new one
