early royal castle, now buried under c19 work by goodridge of bath, who in 1842 started by clothing one of two windmills as a tower. r.v. leach who owned it later collaborated with j.a. randell to massively extend the castle in 1860-80 in a fanciful neo-norman style. the castle is currently split into several residences, and is private.
