c15 tower, added to a norman church , with much later expansion and restoration. locked, no sign of a keyholder. it seems that south essex is full of incomers with no interest in the area's heritage. this church still sits in a rural area, but the tide of tawdry executive estates and p.v.a. windows crawls ever closer, and the bleak beauty of these thames-side fens and marshes will soon be gone.
