the east apse of the church of 1335 originally contained not the chancel, but a vestry, which was lit by a small window, now gone. the apex of the gable held a window which lent light to the chancel to the west, as at great maplestead still.

apse roof , opened up and decorated during the restoration of 1851-7, started under r.c.carpenter, who died before finishing the job. the apse was originally cut off as a vestry.
