ugo foscolo tomb, st.nicholas, chiswick, london

tomb to the romantic poet and writer ugo foscolo, + 1827, probably designed by marochetti. a supporter of italian nationhood, he spent his life oscillating between academic and popular acclaim as a literary lion, and debt stricken exile. an impractical dreamer who seems to have annoyed his friends as much as his enemies, he was taken up by the nascent italian state for political reasons 44 years after his death, and his body was eventually reburied as a patriot in italy at santa croce in florence amongst the great and the good.
