the passageway to the square runs through the early c18 premises of berry bros. and rudd, whose wine vaults are underneath. the odd panelling actually provides clever storage for the protective shutters that fitted over the shop windows, hence the handles at the bottom to make it easier to lift them out.

tiny square with facades rebuilt c.1731 by the wine merchants berry bros. and rudd, whose vaults burrow everywhere beneath these streets. the last proper duel with swords in london took place here in the late c18, and another with guns in the mid c19, though surely no one could miss at such close range . the bust is of palmeston, who lived here as p.m.

detail of the odd but brilliant last major work by alfred gilbert, with faith and hope kneeling by charity. it is supposed to be a fountain, though the water is hidden in a grilled trough, and the inclusion of two large lights rather overbalances the composition. like his entire oeuvre, rather a curate's egg, but a truly splendid one.

there is a languid eroticism to this brilliant last major work by alfred gilbert, with faith and hope kneeling by charity. it is supposed to be a fountain, though the water is hidden in a grilled trough, and the inclusion of two large lights rather overbalances the composition. like his entire oeuvre, rather a curate's egg, but a truly splendid one; this swan song of art nouveau dates from 1927-32.
