built in 1853-4 by a.d.gough, the first of his group of kentish rag islington churches which reproduce nene valley spires on a mini scale, using picturesque grouping to fool the mind into thinking that here is a church with transepts and chapels, clerestories and aisles , everything ticked off on a toy church scale. its only when you look closer that you realise the size, like a tardis in reverse. the little lead crossing "tower" in particular reminded me of rushbrooke's cardboard organ in suffolk; as there, the builder gave a lot of bang for each buck spent on the building, the ecclesiologist hated this sort of theatrical gothic, not real enough so immoral.

built 1870-1 by c.g.searle as the new court congregational church, now a catholic church . the odd plaster saint cannot hide its chapel nature; it is an auditorium not a temple of the mysteries. excellent horseshoe gallery with ironwork panels and supports, grand reredos, and roof with mandala ventilators
