built on a cathedral scale for the irvingite catholic apostolic church in 1853, the nave was never finished, ending in a small triple porch and temporary brick wall, and the 300 ft. spire failed to materialise either. however, what raphael brandon did build is spectacle enough, if somewhat lacking in the originality shown by later goths, being a fair copy of a mid c13 english greater church.

these three arches are all that was built of the planned proud west front of the church built by brandon in 1853 for the catholic apostolic church. its apostles died, christ didn't re-appear, and the flock dwindled to a handful, leaving them the rather secretive owners of a lot of property and more churches than they can ever hope to fill again, barring the second coming of christ with irving by his side, along with two sets of apostles, one lot galilean, the other victorian. they have sold some churches, and rent others out, like this one, which is used by the university of london chaplaincy. their church at albury in surrey remains forever locked, awaiting the end; their pearson church in maida vale is still in use by the apostles descendants, they do not welcome visitors or questions, and photography inside is not allowed.

this green woman from the exterior of the s.e.chapel of christ the king is one of the few carvings without immediate mediaeval precedent, and all the better for it. built on a cathedral scale for the irvingite catholic apostolic church in 1853, the nave was never finished, ending in a small triple porch and temporary brick wall, and the 300 ft. spire failed to materialise either. however, what raphael brandon did build is spectacle enough, if somewhat lacking in the originality shown by later goths, being a fair copy of a mid c13 english greater church.

view of the church from the east, showing the chapel of the apostles on the right. built for the catholic apostolic church in 1858 by brandon, now rented to the university of london chaplaincy. the tower and spire never made it, nor did the west front. the apostolic lot still await the second coming in maida vale.

On maida avenue, this irvingite church is one of few stll open to believers, but they do not welcome photographers. An odd anachronism, this bunch are rich due to gifts from victorian believers and still own some massive churches and much other property in england and scotland, and remain secretive and apocalyptic. The church here is by pearson 1891-3. I did once gain entry, but the caretaker was adamant that no photos should be taken, and was unwilling to discuss the beliefs of a sect whose apostles died a century ago without having seen the expected end of the world.

this 1891 pearson church on maida avenue is still irvingite, and does not allow interior photos. a seeming anachronism, this bunch are rich due to their past and still own some cathedral sized churches some of which they lease out due to falling numbers of believers since the death of their last apostle.

on maida avenue this church is still used by its irvingite owners, a shrinking eschatological group, rich in property and builders of some of the most splendid cathedral sized churches of the c 19th . one wonders what will happen to it all when they reach the last believer. probably end up in lawyers pockets.
