detail of the emphasis on line in english art and architecture rather than the expression of theory that is so important to the rationalist french. here arch flows into column with no capital. here the vault's tas-de-charge rests on a corbel not a full shaft. all built in the closing years of the c12; england breaking the classic rules of gothic from the start.

view of the church from the east. rebuilt from 1180 after welsh destruction, the church is in a stripped back transitional style related to other south western work, the lack of capitals being repeated at wells, though not in the main arcades as here. the same english horizontality occurs, the lack of emphasis on seperate bays that was to lead english gothic rapidly away from french

this large arch was built in the early c13, throwing two smaller chapels off the transept into one.

hotel rooms spread into the south tower on the west front from the old hunting lodge built into the west range of the cloisters. unusually, it was in this range that the dorter was situated.
