the black hostelry, built into the infirmary arcade of c. 1180.until fairly recently this was a great b+b , a wonderful place to stay when visiting the cathedral , an architectural palimpsest overwritten many times. you could taste the history when you woke , up close and personal with these arches in your room, and seeing the octagon in the mist looming over you from your window I'll never forget.

this is the nave of the infirmary chapel, at the end of the building, with the blocked arch of a two storey chancel at the far end. built c.1180

this arcade and the great corbel figure are at the west end of the nave of the ruined infirmary. it was built c.1250 on the traditional nave and aisles plan. the nave is open to the sky, the aisles have houses built into them, as at ely.

i'd say that this corbel proves that not every triple face refers to the trinity! it's in the ruined infirmary which was built c.1250 on the traditional nave and aisles plan. the nave is open to the sky, the aisles have houses built into them, as at ely.
