Naked Man Orchid (Orchis italica), Crete

A perfectly-named orchid. The flowers do look like naked people and the dangly bit between their legs leaves no doubt that they are men! The one on the right has a forked appendage it seems!!
Fan-lipped Orchid (Orchis collina), Crete

We only came across this once in an area of small fields in south-central Crete.

A very distinctive-looking orchid which I think is this species. Some books seem to call it the Woodcock Orchid, but I've no idea why?
Ophrys phaidra, Crete

This was a very distinctive-looking orchid with a beautiful velvety appearance when you got close. It is however one of the smaller-flowered species.
Ophrys grammica, Crete

This species belongs to a very difficult-to-identify group of species, which also hybridise with other species. This makes it very difficult to ever be sure of which species, subspecies of hybrid you are looking at. This was also in the Asfendos Gorge.
Grecian Spider Orchid (Ophrys spruneri), Crete

Spider Orchids seemed quite uncommon, but we may have been there at slightly the wrong time? They have a very dark, large, velvety appearance. This one was growing on a steep, south-facing slope at the upper edge of the Asfendos Gorge.
Giant Orchid (Barlia robertiana), Crete

This is a very early orchid, found commonly throughout the Mediterranean. It grows around 40-50cm tall, sometimes more. This was in the Asfendos Gorge.
Bory's Orchid (Orchis boryi), Crete

This seems to be quite a rare orchid on Crete, a bit like the Four-Spotted Orchid but much more compact and 'chunky'.

Occasionally we came across unspoilt roadside banks with displays like this. Sadly, these sights are gradually becoming rarer.
Bumblebee Orchid (Ophrys bombyliflora), Crete

|
Not named because of the bees visiting it, but from the little squat flowers that are reminiscent of tiny bumblebees. This was near Spili.
Four-spotted Orchid (Orchis quadripunctata), Crete

Named from the four tiny black dots on the white patch in the throat of each flower. It is quite common and is always a vivid shade of purple.

We didn't come across this endemic species very often. This was near Spili.
A species of Ophrys orchid, Crete

In Greece, and especially on Crete, this big genus of orchids is comprised of many species and they are known to hybridise. I haven't decided which species or variety this is, but it is very beautiful whatever...
Pink Butterfly Orchid (Orchis papilionacea), Crete

|
Definitely one of the most stunning of Crete's orchids. It is usually quite scattered and in small numbers, but this was a nice clump near Spili.

These were quite widespread and seemed to grow largely in very dry areas, often protected by spiny plants. These were near Spili.
