The scientific name of all three kind of redwood trees contains the word "Sequoia": Sequoia sempervirens - Coast Redwood Sequoia giganteum - Giant or Sierra Redwood Sequoia glyptostroboides - Dawn Redwood The name was chosen in honor of the American Indian Sequo-Yah, son of a Cherokee mother and the German immigrant Georg Gist. Sequo-Yah developed the first Indian alphabet and brought scripture to the Indians.
