Kumarahou is a traditional Maori medicinal plant that grows in the upper part of new Zealand's North Island. It is still used for a number of conditions. Uses include for respiratory problems, as a blood purifier, as a tonic and for rheumatism and gout. Maori medicinal uses: fresh leaves of Kumarahou were applied to wounds. Wounds were also bathed in an extract collected from boiling the leaves.
It flowers about mid September. It is commonly called “gum diggers soap” as a slight lather can be formed when its flowers are rubbed with water. The flowers contain saponin a substance which is used in detergents and foaming agents.
