The sculpture - Te Ahi Tupua - sits in the middle of the roundabout at the southern entrance to the city of Rotorua. Originally meant to cost $500,000, it ended up costing $743,029. It was installed about two years ago. In May last year, peeling paint needed to be replaced.

The Rotary Club of Taumarunui erected a giant moa driftwood sculpture on the main street of Taumarunui in June 2012. The sculpture was built by a local artist and sculptor Jack Marsden Mayer . The moa] were nine species (in six genera) of flightless birds endemic to New Zealand.] The two largest species, Dinornis robustus and Dinornis novaezelandiae, reached about 3.6 m (12 ft) in height with neck outstretched, and weighed about 230 kg (510 lb).When Polynesians settled New Zealand around CE 1280, the moa population was about 58,000.] Moa extinction occurred around Ce 1400, primarily due to over hunting by Māori.[
