South Hadley, Rte. 47. The woman running this place laughed when she saw me taking the picture. She said their competitors called her after a local newspaper featured a photo of their enterprise; the rivals said this place was "cheating" by attracting the press, which they hadn't done intentionally. I didn't get a Christmas tree this year, but in future I'd buy it from them: she said they give a discount to firefighters and deliver trees to those unable to come out and get 'em. Very kind and pleasant proprietor.

Hadley, Mass. I've always loved this simple sign at Cook's ice cream place, on my way home from the heavy-duty shopping strip on Route 9. [Footnote, summer 2009: the sign has been repainted -- no more charming rust.]
