Submitted to the Vintage Photos Theme Park for the theme, "Historic Sites."
The Old Virginia Colonial Capitol contains the Hall of Burgesses, meeting place for the elected lower house of the Colonial General Assembly, where many rousing debates occurred between Loyalist and Separatist-leaning representatives. It was here in May 1765, that Patrick Henry delivered a fiery address in support of five resolutions against the Stamp Act, which he had authored and presented for approval. His critical remarks comparing the king to Julius Caesar and Charles the First brought shouted cries of "Treason" from several members but Henry continued, “George the Third,” he said, “may profit by their example. If this be treason, make the most of it!” Henry's five resolutions narrowly passed but the fifth and most inflammatory resolution was rescinded the following day. Word of the resolutions spread quickly among the colonies and significantly contributed to the groundswell of defiance against Parliament and the Crown.
