Houmas House Plantation near New Orleans, 1979

21 Feb 2010 126
Submitted to the Vintage Photos Theme Park for the theme, DISTINCTIVE HOUSES. The house was built in 1840. This was a sugar plantation, originally established in 1784 on land appropriated from the native Houma tribe by two enterprising Frenchmen. At its peak, it spread across 12,000 acres and included four separate sugar mills. It also had the grisly distinction of being the largest slave holding in Louisiana. Approximately 750 slaves worked the cane fields, sugar mills, and the estate. The blurred model in the foreground is doing her best impression of the broken Scarlett O'hara just returned from Atlanta. "After all, tomorrow is another day." Here's a link for more information on the house and plantation: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Houmas
